superstorm sandy. to alison kosik live for us in new york at the stock exchange. what are you learning? >> what are we learning? gosh, what we learned that sandy did quite a number on new york city, and now the damage estimates are tallied up and new york city's mayor michael bloomberg is asking the federal government for $9.8 billion, with a b, $9.8 billion to help in the recovery. follow me here. that's after starting with the city's total public and private losses which were estimated at $19 billion, and then you break that out, so about $4 billion was covered by private insurers, about $5 billion expected to come from fema and then come up with the $9.8 billion figure which is just part of the $30 billion aid package that new york governor andrew cuomo has requested. what mayor bloomberg has done, brooke, he sent a letter to the members of the new york state congressional delegation asking for this money, saying, new york city will struggle to recover in the long-term unless this money -- this federal funding is given. >> was he being specific as far as where in the city the money

sandy hit new jersey, voters there have given him a 72% approval rating. the highest recorded by quinnipiac for a new jersey governor. ever. 95% of new jersey voters gave christie an excellent or good rating for his response to hurricane sandy. and despite criticism from some national republican leaders, 84% approved of christie's praise of president obama's response to the storm, including 69% of republicans. newark's democratic mayor, cory booker, told the new jersey star ledger today, quote, i'm giving a run consideration. critical to my decision is not the difficulties of the politics or positioning in polls, but choosing the position from which i can make the best contributions to the city and state i love. meanwhile, a new rutgers eagleton poll finds governor christie leading mayor booker in a hypothetical race, 53 to 34%. joining me now, david corn and msnbc political analyst, jonathan allen, senior washington correspondent for politico. david corn, let's talk about cory booker for a moment, who i think was poised to run for governor probably prior to chris christie's p

3. >> update on the response to hurricane sandy. >> afternoon, everybody. i will be brief because i figure you got more questions. some of the highlights from the last couple of days. as of this morning, around 6:00 a.m., and we will have numbers later this afternoon be looked at you, but 317,000 folks have registered in the three states for individual assistance. and a total of -- is three had a 20 million for the three states. the yesterday northeaster had impacts appeared in many cases precautionary measures were taken to shut down operations. there was concern about that, but it was based on the forecast the day before when decisions were made, said those were done in coordination with state and local officials. power outages increased slightly. power outages due to the nor'easter did increase the number of customers without power, and as of this morning, about 42,000 people in addition to those who have lost power from sandy are reported out. that number is down from the original impacts of the northeastern, but we continue to cede power restoration. the numbers improved. with

hard by superstorm sandy are struggling to open their doors for black friday. one brooklyn toys r us, get this, actually operating out of a big tent. many folks, though, not just bargain hunting for gifts, they're also stocking up on essentials. and rick leventhal is live in brooklyn. what's it like there at that location? >> reporter: you know, gregg, we've seen the craziness on black friday in so many stores and so many places. not here in brooklyn, not today on this black friday. in large part because, as you mentioned, this toys r us flooded -- that's the tent they built out front. the store behind it normally holds 1100 people. they can only fit about 200 inside that tent. you see the babies r us, the kohls next door also shut down. the flood ruined everything, so wednesday they opened this tent. we can show you that they did bring in new toys, they have lined the shelves in this much smaller space, and people were lined up to get inside overnight, but today it's pretty quiet. no lines to speak of at all. and the store is just hoping to make back some of what it's been losing ov

sandy was an unprecedented storm that left a devastating impact on new jersey and the new york region, damaging homes, businesses and leaving millions without power. my district was hit tack -- particularly hard. numerous substations in our area were sub merged under water, leaving residents without electricity for nearly two weeks. as a result thousands of lehman have worked around the clock to assist those in need and help restore power. not only have those in new jersey and new york region joined together to help the impact by sandy, but hardness of individuals from across the country have come to lend a hand to the people of new jersey. just the other day as i was touring damages around my district i saw license plates that raised from wisconsin to louisiana. i want to thank all the workers and volunteers whether they have come around the block or hundreds of miles away to assist a region in our recovery. while the road ahead to full recovery will be long, there is no doubt the progress would have been -- the progress we have made would not have been done without the assistance of

losses caused by sandy, one stands out this week. superstorm sandy wreaked havoc on the ali forney center, the largest organization of its kind serves more than 1,000 highly vulnerable lgbt youth annually with access to showers, beds, hot meals and mental and physical health services. our foot soldier this week, carl siciliano, ali foreany's executive director and founder knows it's a safe place for these kids. he spent the day before the storm preparing for the city-wide shutdown. he directed the youth to emergency storm shelters, he told us "they didn't provide all the services we did but we knew at least they'd be safest there." carl didn't expect the devastation that hit his own cozy but highly functional 1200 square foot center. four days after the storm he was finally able to get inside. and what he found was four feet of water. all of the computers, medical and food supplies were destroyed. the space carl had made an essential escape for the most vulnerable of new york's youth, 90% of whom carl says are young people of color, that space it was deemed uninhabitable. through a simple

seeing tapering off. the week before hurricane sandy. lot of people say sandy killed him. i think it was more icing on the cake. but he really did engage a bunch of voters that had not been paying attention. it really put the race in play, but not quite enough. i will talk about but more and a couple minutes. the simplest thing, how we looked at it. in the senate, we saw a couple of outstanding races, but what seems to happen is there were 10 tossup races and become a down to, what is it? montana and north dakota? if they both go democratic -- if they both go republican it will have won seven out of 10. it goes to reinforce something that we already knew. when you get down to that last group of tossups senate races, they never break down the middle. they tend to break even, two- thirds one way, one-third of the other. it is whatever the gust of wind is. it could have been sandy related, maybe not. what ever happened, the use of them break either seven out of 10 or nine out of 10 in favor of republicans. it held up enormously. this, i think their team had a far better night than an

with a statement at the top saying sandy reduced industrial production output by nearly 1 percentage point so the bottom line is the industrial production would have been above expectations were it not for sandy. and a lot of people took a while for them to read that. i think that helped turn the markets around a little bit right now. elsewhere, the sectors hit hard by concerns of the fiscal cliff on the downside today. it's been an ugly week for industrial trust. down 6% since the election. the association met this week in san diego. had an annual meeting and my understanding is fairly downbeat. a little bit of concern. even though the fundamentals of real estate doing well. supply is muted. capital is cheap. in theory, not a bad time to be in the real estate business. utilities down more than 6%. they were hurt by sandy a little bit. the northeast ones. there's a one-month chart. finally today, a positive print on the overall utilities but a rocky road for them and same situation with telecom. they're the most affected by the fiscal cliff issues. telecom down about 5.5% since the election b
